Anime In The 60's
Anime in the 1960's came to existence because of Japan's Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka created the first internationally successful animation series in Testuwan Atom, also known as Astro Boy in 1963. He was influenced by some of his favorite cartoons as a child, such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The West produced stand-alone cartoons. Tezuka created something different. Astro Boy and his later work Kimba the White Lion, told a continuing story revolving around recurring characters, both heroes and villains. Characters could change, and this was something that would become one of the main selling points of Anime. Tezuka's stories and animations were based on Walt Disney's style. He used large heads and expressive faces. The unusually large, round, shiny eyes especially were of note, as Tezuka wanted to be able to display a range of emotions for his characters. Tezuka also added his own touches, such as giant sweat drops or angry pop-out veins. His style would continue to influence many future Anime artists.
